Who is Eligible
- The applicant must be the first author or the principal student author of the submitted publication.
- The applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student. An undergraduate is defined as a student who had not yet completed his or her bachelor’s degree when the publication was submitted for publication or presentation.
- The applicant must be studying in a fuel-cycle-relevant discipline.
- The applicant must submit an on-line application and a journal publication that supports fuel cycle research that was published between December 2011 and the date of the application. An undergraduate student may submit a conference presentation as a publication. Concepts that add value to the Fuel Cycle Technologies program will also be considered. Publications that have been accepted by a journal or conference but have not yet been published or presented are eligible.
- The applicant 1) must have been a student at the time the publication was submitted for publication, 2) must be a student at the time of the application, and 3) must be planning to graduate no earlier than December 2013.
- The applicant must be part of an on-going research program or a research program that was completed no earlier than August 1, 2011.
- An applicant who won an award in a previous Innovations competition may be eligible for a 2013 award. The applicant should submit a different publication with significantly new information and state the following in the "Further explanation" section of the application: "I won a ‹place› award in the ‹year› competition with my publication ‹title› which was published on ‹date› in ‹journal›. This publication is significantly different from the award-winning publication in the following ways:" and then describe the differences.
- Applicants who won awards in previous Innovations competitions may be eligible for another award:
- Applicants who won first-place awards in the Open Competition are not eligible.
- Applicants who won second-place awards in the Open Competition are eligible for a first-place award in the Open Competition. They are not eligible for another second-place award in the Open Competition or an award in the Competition for Universities with <$600 Million in 2011 Science and Engineering R&D Expenditures or the Undergraduate Competition.
- Applicants who won awards in the 2011 or 2012 "Competition for Universities with <$630 Million in 2009 Science and Engineering R&D Expenditures" or the 2010 "Competition for Universities with <$500 Million in 2008 Science and Engineering R&D Expenditures" are eligible for an award in the Open Competition. They are not eligible for an award in the Competition for Universities with <$600 Million in 2011 Science and Engineering R&D Expenditures or the Undergraduate Competition.
- Applicants who won awards in the Undergraduate Competition are eligible for an award in the Open Competition or the Competition for Universities with <$600 Million in 2011 Science and Engineering R&D Expenditures. They are not eligible for another award in the Undergraduate Competition.
- The applicant may re-submit a publication submitted to a previous Innovations competition as long as the publication did not win an award and meets the 2013 eligibility requirements.
- The applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
